What's Wrong with a male and female together?

britbiker Jan 06, 2005 03:25 PM

I'm finishing up a cage for my two beardies that is 4 feet long, two heet high, and two feet deep. I just finished reading a message that mentioned two dragons shouldn't be kept together unless they are both females. Why? I have a male and a female, both are about 3 months old. They seem to get along fine. Will this change?
Thanks from a newbie.

well i have had my two male and female bearded dragons together for about a yr n and a half now. and they live fine. i think some ppl dont want them to be toghet unless for breeding. well im breding my my female had her first cluch about 6 mounths ago. but some time the males get to dominate and eat all the food. my female is the dominate one in the cage. my male was really skinny so i had to feed him pinkie alot to fatten him up. he ate today 25 crickets and 2 pinkies and my female i think has eggs ate like 15 not as much as she usally does hope this help good luck and mine are ina a 125 so it is about the same.

The common two top reasons are...

1) The male may breed the female at too young of an age causeing health problems for the female

2) STRESS

and if you read the post by: bdking15 thats the whole probem.

he is doing something that if he seperated the pair he would not have to do.

his own words "the female is dominiant, the male is skinny and is fed pinkys"

normally you only give a female pinkys if she had been laying eggs and is thin.

a male should not need that; he has the case where the lady is running things in that cage and his male is suffering from it.

not good ... Grrr...

They're probably alright for now but you should separate them sometime in the next month. They can start hitting sexual maturity as young as 4-5 months old and if your female breeds at this age it will cause serious problems. There are also dominance issues and stress issues that come from housing them together. Even as full grown adults it's not recomended because basically your female would be gravid constantly, this isn't good for any animal and will shorten her life considerably.

There is also the fact, in this case, that it isn't easy to sex bearded dragons at 3 months of age. Sometimes even at 6 months dragons can be sexed incorrectly so you may not even have a male and female. They could both be male and they deffinitely don't get along once both are mature.

oh one other point I wanted to make which I forgot above. If you purchased the two bearded dragons at the same time and at the same place, there is a very high chance they are siblings and it's not a good ideal to breed siblings at all, especially with bearded dragons. There is a limited genepool in North America and most dragons are related in some way because of it.
