Corucia shedding....when to intervene...

Tigergenesis Jan 06, 2005 03:46 PM

My little Kiwi started shedding late last night. He's gotten it all off except his feet. Do I give him more time or is it time for me to intervene?

I think that depends on how often you normally handle your animal. I don't handle mine regularly, so it can be stressful to them when I help them with a shed. For that reason, I usually wait a day or two after the rest of the shed is gone before I intervene. I can usually keep an eye on the unshed skin and notice when it starts to dry out and become a potential problem.

However, if the animal is used to being handled there's no harm in doing it now. Just make sure the skin really is ready to come off.

Once again thank you for your help. I handle him daily, but he doesn't seem to like being touched...if that makes sense. He seems to enjoy climbing all over me or hanging out on my head or shoulder, but doesn't really like to sit still in my hand or let me 'pet' him. I think I'll give him some more time and keep an eye on it. He got quite a bit more off yesterday.

If he doesn't already have one, you might put in a water dish large enough to soak in. Or you could add some damp moss to a hide that's near or in the hot spot.

He's so funny. He avoids getting in the water dish and usually doesn't enjoy being misted - freaks out a bit. But since he's shedding I've seen him get a bit more in the dish and he seems to love being misted right now. I added a dish with damp moss the other day, but I haven't seen him use it. I think I'll make it into an actual hide with the moss and maybe he'll use it more. Thanks!
