Feeding in a Seperate cage?

justinmatthew Jul 04, 2003 01:11 AM

How many feed in a seperate tank. I used to but don't anymore and haven't ever had a problem. I don't like to feed in a seperate because my seperate tanks don't have undertank heaters and I like feeding them in their own tank so that they have the heat and I don't have to move them after a feed.

I always feed my snakes in a seperate cage. Just something I was told was best so I have done it that way for as long as I can remember.

I always heard that the reason to feed in a seperate cage was to establish an aggressive zone and a non-aggresive zone with the snake. The feeding cage would obviously be the aggressive zone and it would only strike and so forth in there. In theory, the snake would eventually learn that the living tank was only for living and not for killing or striking or any of that. This is supposed to some how make the snake more tame and calm for when you take it out for handling. I feed mine in the same tank it lives in and he is calm as anyone could hope for.

I recently got a 13 year old boa who has been feed in the cage the whole time. And you can't stick your hand in the cage or he will go after you, I have to wait for him to climb out of the tank in order to handle him. I am going to work on breaking him of this but we will see.

We feed our snakes in seperate cages. I used to feed our large BP in his living tank, but he starting hunting hands when we would just try to get him out for handling, so made a safe decision. Now we feed all the snakes that way, so their living tank is more of a "safe zone" and they shouldn't expect to have a mouse or rat going in there any more. This doesn't mean that they don't have to be watched when the tank gets opened though.

We feed in a seperate tank. Have since we got our baby 1 year ago. He knows when he goes in his "kill box" that it's time to eat. He also has never missed a feeding.
