Leopard Gecko-HELP! Possible Emergency?

ManyAsOne Jan 06, 2005 07:06 PM

I have a baby albino leopard gecko who I recieved as a Christmas present- my family bought him from a local pet store. He just now went over to the corner that he seems to have chosen for his 'bathroom' area, and instead of excreting a solid stool, passed a fairly large quantity of clear fluid, then proceeded to walk away and started to lick at his cloaca.

I know that this is abnormal behavior, but I don't know what it could be indicative of, and I have had him for such a short time that I don't yet know which if any of our local vets know how to handle reptiles... how serious of a problem is this, and is it possibly caused by something I've done?

He's been fed mealworms since I've had him and has a little dish of calcium supplement- sometimes I dust it onto the mealworms before feeding or mix it into the water, since I'm not certain he uses the dish.. he also has a water bowl. The cage bottom is covered with paper towels which I change often, so there's no chance of the problem being caused by substrate ingestion..

I've been a little worried about him for a while now since he looks a little on the skinny side and only eats about two mealworms a day, but nothing like this has ever happened before.

HELP ME PLEASE!

umm, it sounds like it just took a leak. You should feed it crickets over meal worms though.

I tried that, he wouldn't eat the crickets... anyway, he seems to be mostly fine now, but we're swinging by the reptile vet anyway for a basic checkup.

Thank you, though.

Took a leak? I've never heard of a leo passing anything other than solid urates unless there was a medical issue of some kind. Anyone else out there heard of this?

What size mealworms are you feeding? If your gex is a baby, a full sized mealie is too big. Has he continued to defecate normally since the incident? If so, he's most likely okay but a fecal exam by a vet is still a good idea.
