stuck eye caps

maestrOwen Jan 06, 2005 09:41 PM

When Daphne went into shed, I made sure to raise her humidity and everything so that it would go smoothly...it didn't work out so well

ick

the only part that's still attached are the eyecaps...how do I get those little buggers off? anything that doesn't require tweezers (I don't want to risk damaging her eyes)?

thanks

did.I put my snake in a cotton snakebag/pillow case, placed her in a tub with water a FEW centimeters or 1 inch deep, just enough to keep the snake and the bag wet.Leave her to soak for about an hour, pull her out. With your thumb GENTLY roll the eyecap off.NEVER PICK,RIP,or chip at it with your nails or anything else.GENTLY ROLL THE EYECAPS OFF.Make sure they are well HYDRATED and WATER LOGGED.Good Luck. Here she is.Just shed I needed to help her,the eyecapes just rolled right off.Just cleaned her cage too and she spills the water.I hate it when they do that!

Hey man...I soaked her for an hour and tried...no luck so I tried for another hour. One of the eyecaps had gotten rubbed off in the bag, but the other one is still stuck. I could leave her in for a few hours tomorrow. Do you know of anything else that might help?

thanks

i had the same problem with a redtail. get some "shed-ease" and use it on the area frequently for a couple days. then take a lukewarm wet washcloth and gently rub the eye. it should come off. as a last resort (cant get to or afford a vet), you can take a piece of scotch tape and apply it to the eye. carefully remove the tape (dont pull hard this can actually pull the eye out of socket!!!)more detailed instructions can be found at http://www.joecompelreptiles.com/ball_bits/retained_cap/index.asp

I had this problem one time with one eye cap.Tried misting, soaking and it didn't work.I'm sure it works most of the time but this time.I just waited till the next shed and made sure humiditiy was sky high when I first noticed signs of shed. Then it was all good.GOod luck with what ever you try.

hey
Yeah the site pythonis linked to said it would be fine to wait until the next shed. As long as a stuck eye cap isn't going to cause Daphne complications, I'd rather not mess with her eye
