My Albino Red Ear Slider and a Question

yasin1 Jan 06, 2005 10:00 PM

Hey there;

First of all thanks for all your help about the blue crayfish. I didn't get the animal to avoid any possible fight.

Secondly, I am posting a picture of my RES. I took this picture yesterday as it was trying to climb one of the rocks in its enclosure. Enjoy...

By the way I had a question for you guys. I normally feed my turtle in a seperate tank to keep his original tank clean. And to this seperate tank I usually put some greens, turtle pallets and ground beef. Yesterday I recognized that the animal only eats the beef and nothing else. So I removed the beef today but it didn't touch the other stuff. Isn't a diet consisting only beef dangerous? How am I gonna switch this cutie to other foods? Should I put some fish in his aquarium? etc.

Thanks a lot;
Yasin

Try shrimp, dried krill, scallops, clams, minnows, earthworms and keep offering the the turtle diet as well. I would not give him ground beef. It is very fatty. I am sure if you offer a variety there is something that will strike his fancy.

Young RES are typically highly carnivorous as youngsters. They become more and more vegetarian as they age. So this behavior is normal. I would continue to offer some greens -- NOT iceberg lettuce or spinach (my guys LOVE dandelion greens)-- as part of your albino's diet. Sooner or later, he will get the idea.

Also, ground beef is a poor dietary choice (Don't mean to sound overly critical). Reptomin is great. Tetra produces a bottle that contains shrimp, krill and mini Reptomin. I've used this combo with great success. As your little one gets larger, maybe around an inch or so, you may want to look into the Mazuri diet. That is some good stuff.

Good luck!
