Hybrid asian pond/ box turtles?

sonoranaturalist Jan 06, 2005 11:10 PM

I had my female Asain Box lay two big eggs this past summer, so on a wim, I set them up in a shoe box of vermiculite.....they both hatched!!! I have NO male Asian Box and have had the female over 15 years...this is the first time she laid and she was a large WC adult when I got her. She lives with a trio of Asian pond turtles (M.mutica) is he the Dad?? Offspring look like M.mutica babies..... and those I have hatched every other year or so, for the past 10 years. Who can email me or post a pic of a newly hatched baby Asian Box (Cuora trifasciata)?? So I can compare?
Like the North American Box babies, these two I hatched , show no sign of a hinged plastron yet, and have very long tails.....

Sounds like a hybrid - C.trifasciata x M.mutica have been hybridized several times before. Can you post pics?

While wild hybrids do occur, many are produced on turtle farms and accidentally in temple ponds. I know of a turtle farm that purposely produces "iversoni" by crossing mutica with trifasciata. I've got a photo of this mating somewhere and the offspring. M. mutica is so much cheaper than trifasciata that some farms will mix the two since the hatchlings sometimes resemble pure trifasciata so much that they can sell them to unsuspecting buyers as pure bred tri's.
