I need help! Got a CB Baby Carpet Cham @ 1 month

jeffreypeacock Jan 07, 2005 09:05 AM

I have read how fragile these carpet chameleons can be, and how fragile babies can be. I need your help, currently I have keeping him in a homemade cage found here (http://www.screameleons.com/portal/alias__Screameleons/lang__en-US/tabID__3467/DesktopDefault.aspx) and things are working out ok. I mist him and put him next to an open window for direct sunlight all day (I live in central florida), so I don't use a UV light or basking light. Any tips?

Hi there,

Those homemade cages are great as a temporary home. We use them for the first 2-3 weeks. It allows us to monitor how much they are eating as a small group, and also lets us begin sorting them out by size. We can also use them to do a quick head count, as it is hard to count 20 or so babies in a single cage.

However, since you are dealing with a single chameleon, you should consider purchasing something more sturdy. For a 1 month old chameleon I would purchase a 22 gallon reptarium or a small all-aluminum screen cage.

You will still need to purchase an acceptable bulb. For a small cage, use a combination of an 18" Zoomed Reptisun and a 40-60 watt heat bulb. I would advise against keeping your baby near an open window. A small enclosure and a small chameleon can overheat very quickly if left in direct sunlight.

Good Luck!

Well the weather is bit breezy so there is a good temperature of about 85 F. As far as the cage, I have a 18 X 12 X 20 (LWH) cage, but I feel he is way too small for a cage of that size. He may be younger than a month old, from the looks of it his SVL might be a little under an inch. Another issue I am seeing, I am feeding him pinheads but the pinheads are growing faster than the cham. The crickets are a little bit bigger than then the width of his head, is it too dangerous to feed it to him?

Pinheads are generally very tiny. Petstores often sell 1/4" crix as pinheads, which will be too large. I would try to get a vial of fruitflies just to be safe.

Ill make a switch to that, as far as lightning. Is regular periods of warm sunlight sufficient?
