2 snakes, 1 tank??? help needed

cheeeezzz Jan 07, 2005 09:59 AM

hey everyone, I have a ball right now that ive had for about 5 months and now im hooked on it. This weekend at the reptile extravaganza Im pretty sure im gonna buy a baby blood. My ball (Bandit) is about 20 inches right now and Im assuming the blood will be right around that size too. I have a 20 gallon glass tank and I was wondering if it would be ok to keep them together for the next few months, or if I should get a new tank w/ the new python. Thanks for the help ahead of time, this is my first snake and Im a newbie to this forum.

You should never keep two snakes in the same cage together, except for breeding purposes. A 20 gallon is probably a bit big for a baby blood anyway. They like to hide, and the space can stress them out. Your two snakes have different requirements, and you should research what your new blood will need by reading care sheets for the proper setup. Get a separate tank for the new guy, and set it up just for him/her. Both of your snakes will appreciate it, as well as being safer and healthier.

Ok thanks, I didnt think it was a good idea but i just wanted to make sure. Ive read a million care sheets and i know what the set up should be, just wasnt sure about the same tank. Thanks for the help. What do u keep yours in??

Work great and there only like $5. just put some holes in the side with a soidering iron. Set up a hide and water bowl and a heating source and a monitor for it with thermostat ect. I'll try to help explain better later just no time right now sorry man. Definately get the cage set up before you get the snake.

Ok nice, i saw a couple set ups in this forum so i think i have a pretty good idea. Im gonna go get the rubbermade box and the rest of the supplies and put it together tonight, then ill post it up and u can tell me how it looks. thanks

mine is in a rubbermaid container, but its a larger one so I could get something heavy duty. She proved to be an escape artist within 3 hours of purchase, and escaped into my car. Luckily we found her quick. I've heard bloods are really skittish in large places though, so I wouldn't get anything this big if I were going to get another baby. You won't always get lucky.

Also, the things you put under pots to catch water are the perfect size hides. I use 8" ceramic ones on cypress bedding, and its worked great.

OK thanks, I got a new cage set up last night just to make sure everything was working correctly. I had it set up and sprayed it down and had the humidity held at about 60%, then I read a response to a similar topic i posted on the ball python forum, and someone told me that bloods need 80% or higher.
According to the NERD care sheets, both should be kept in cages w/ 50%-60% humidity levels. From experience, can anyone tell me which one (60 or 80%) works best? so far Im going w/ the NERD care sheets.

You need 80% humidity but there seem to be too many health risks with that high humidity. I usually shoot for around 60% or a little higher.
