bearded dragon eggs fertile?

rangertig Jan 07, 2005 10:58 AM

I have a female bearded dragon that has recently gained some weight. I noticed she has lumps in her belly now so, after looking at some pictures of pregnant beardies, I'm guessing that she has eggs in her belly. There is no male, but last July (before I've aquired her) she did mate and lay eggs. The eggs however didn't make it and she was separated from the male after he bit part of her tail off. Now my question is, can the eggs in her belly now be fertile? I know that other lizard species, like leopard geckos, can mate once and store the sperm for up to a year. But I'm not sure about bearded dragons. Please if anyone has any thoughts, let me know. Thanks!

Bearded dragons can retain sperm so there is a good chance those eggs are fertile. The only certian way to tell is to candle the eggs after they are laid with a flashlight, to see there are veins. If you are unable or unwilling to incubate the eggs, it would be best to freeze them before throwing them out, to make sure they are dead.

Thanks for the advice. If they are fertile I will definately incubate them and at least try to hatch them. I've bred leopard geckos before so I can use that incubator and try my hand at hatching beardies. Thanks again!
