Once again - Silica Playsand vs, regular playsand - any different??

photojoe Jan 07, 2005 11:07 AM

I went to lowes and they had playsand (had illustrations of kids happily playing) but it was almost white and really fine and said it had silica.

I've always seen (previous to this) the darker tan sand that is a little less fine. Is the white sand oK? Regular playsand has some slicia in it too, doesn't it?

Thanks

I don't think there is any difference between the two other than color and texture. Most sand is silica based.

a friend of mine showed me this picture yesterday. The bottom two are both playsands, but the lower is silica. It is sharp and dirty.

Very different. I've always seen people recommend AGAINST silica based sands. Melissa Kaplan's website lists silica as a different sand than other playsands, and recommends against it as well.

Thanks Amanda! I was under the impression that all sand was silica based.... That does look sharp and undesirable as a substrate.... Appreciate you calling me on that.... seems though last year there was a very long thread that ended in the lady from Georgia Bearded dragons getting run out of the forum that led me to believe that all sand was silica based and shouldn't be used as a substrate.... That in fact was the main argument that everyone was throwing in her face..... and BTW I really can't believe some of the behavior displayed towards that lady.... she really didn't deserve that.... oh well... water under the bridge....

Anyway ... Thanks Mandee! =0 )

I was pretty suprised when I saw that, too. You hear so many different things, especially on the internet, it's hard to always seperate the fact from rumor. Photographs go much further than words.
