New Tegu mysteriously arrives at rescue

stephiesoo Jan 07, 2005 03:51 PM

Hi!

We received a new Tegu at our rescue IN THE MAIL. The phone number listed is ficticious, the address won't come up on mapquest or anywhere and the guy is not listed in any phone book. I have contacted everyone in the same are with the supposed same last name and can't track him down. All I am wanting to find out is what he was feeding it!! It is an Argentinian black and white. I know what they are supposed to eat but also know if it hasn't been being fed right I will need to gradually switch it. It is eating a little but only a little. It has a bad burn on the top of its head which the vet says will probably need to be cut open and treated because it is not healing right. It also has several parasites which we are treating it for. Does anyone know of a person in the Chicago suburbs that was trying to get rid of a Tegu. Although it was in pretty poor shape we just want to find out more about the past care to make it more comfortable and better able to cope.

Although can you believe someone would MAIL a tegu express postage and not have a phone number or anything. If we had been gone the poor thing would have died. It also arrived on the worst weather day of the year amidst a terrible ice storm in our area. Luckily the post office knows us and the mailperson knocked to let me know she left it at the post office so it wouldn't freeze in her truck and they sent a special truck out to deliver it. We did not mind taking it in and had plenty of room plus knowledge on care but was very UNHAPPY on the handling of this!!

That is absolutely horrible. It's sad to think people care so little for such a wonderful animal.

Yes!

It will of course get the best of care here but it always helps to know what they were eating before, how much, when etc. I assume (maybe right or wrong) that since they MAILED it with no warning and no return info that they probably didn't care enough about it to be feeding it what it needed anyway! But if it is used to eggs and veggies or only mice or only crickets etc it would give us a starting point to know what could entice her to eat more! Right now we are trying a bit of everything to see if there is something that really interests her to get her started.

I don't know if the person is afraid of being prosecuted for poor care, if they were afraid we wouldn't take it etc. But we have a policy of not prosecuting if an animal is willingly surrendered and is able to be taken care of. In extreme circumstances where an animal dies or is near death or if they don't wish to surrender it after having abuse or neglect problems then we feel free to turn them in!

Either way any info is appreciated. Is there anyone on this forum from the Chicago IL area that may have info or that has run across someone in that area trying to get rid of one??

Stephanie
