Vision Cages

Gray_Bandit Jan 07, 2005 04:16 PM

I have decided to go a different route with her cage and instead of building one, I decided to buy a 6'x3'x18" Vision cage. Anybody else use these? And about lighting. I have always been a big fan of Flourescents as they do provide the artificial light the sun would in the wild, but I have read where some people don't seem to find a need for them. Why?

Snakes dont require full spectrum light they get all the vitamin d3 from the mammals they eat. But you could always just throw a strip light in there just to show off your animal they really bring out the colors. And about the visions if you live in a dry area you may need to block up the vents and use an undertank heat element to keep humidity up and the lip on them can be kind of a b@tch though when removing a stubborn retic when they get a tail wrapped on it. Other than that they are decent cage.

And there really isn't a need for a basking light is there? I don't think they bask, just as long as the temps and humidity are proper and there is a warm side and a cold side that should do just fine?

I have the 6ft on, and I have two exto heat pads underneath and a 50watt red bulb for a light. The post above is right you need to block up the vents in the back. I put moss in mine and spray it once a day to keep up the humidity. Heating is hard because the back ground temps are low, so I just bought heat panels as will, so I will see how that goes.

I believe belly heat is much better forlarger snakes seeing thats where they hang out. Most people just use heat tape or large heat mats just make sure you use a thermostat or rheostat.

Hey Jeff,

Regarding your 6-foot Vision, is there sufficient flat space on one half of the the cage ceiling for an 18" square or 18 x 24" heat panel?

I use RHPs exclusively and I've never bought a Vision cage because of all the protruding shrouds and vents in the ceiling (if they ever offer cages with simple flat ceilings I'll be happy and buy some). I need a flat area to mount the panels.

How much flat space do you have on either the right or left half of your Vision cage ceiling?

Thanks!

Bill

In the new Vision model #600s, the ones they have for $299 shipped, of which I bought 4, they have removed the protruding round shroud that is in the other models. The only thing that takes up ceiling space is the vent in the upper back of the enclosure, and it sticks out maybe 8" into the cage and 4 or 5" down. These are rough estimates, as I haven't measured them exactly. I like these better than the models with the rounded shrouds, as those don't do a lot of good for snakes anyway. All in all, for $299 shipped, these cages are great. The ones I ordered did show up with a couple dings here and there on the door tracks, but they were easily fixed with a pair of pliars.

I have enought celing space on the 4ft and the 6ft to place a medium heat pannel. But thats it. I cover the back of the cage up with that stuff you put on the windows in the winter.

I am getting ready to buy one for my yellowhead and just wondered how you mount a florescent fixture to a large Vision. Do you just mount it outside the rear vent and it shines in? I will probably use the shroud to mount a small CHE. I figured mounting a small florescent inside the cage would be a bad idea due to the strength of the retic.

Thanks for any advice.

I never bought one with it but I believe they have an option to put an extra top vent to put one in and some can come with them mounted also I think
