anyone use house geckos for insect control?

codycr6 Jan 07, 2005 04:18 PM

It was mentioned to me that a good form of natural insect control was to let a few house geckos run loose in my house. Has anyone here tried this? The thought doesn't bother me a bit, except for a couple of concerns. For one, I have a bearded dragon in a cage in my den area. Are there chances of the house geckos disturbing her while she sleeps, since they are nocturanal and beardies are notorious heavy sleepers? Another concern is the survival of the geckos. I realise these will not be pets, so I probably will not know for the most part if they live or die. I just bought a new house, and am working on a slight rodent and insect problem. The house is large (over 2500sq. feet) with a basement. I caught a couple of mice in and electronic trap that electrocutes them when they get in it. I plan on removing the trap when I no longer see signs of mice. I am asuming that pesticedes have been used in the past here to control insects, so I can pretty much count on having geckos die from consuming insects that have consumed old poisons. That being known, do I still go through with this? I would really like to get away from chemicals and pesticides....partially for the enviroment, and partially to keep them away from my dragon. I may invest in more reptiles in the future as well, so I have to think of this. I live in the south (TN) so winters are short and usually not too bad, but I assume the geckos will know to seek shelter somewhere in the house.

It want intentional, but when we lived in Hawaii, we had a handful living in the house eating wondering insects. Only bad thing was that the geckos would sometimes leave "presents" on my white uniforms, had to cover them in the closet with garbage bages.. lol Care also had to be given before putting feet into any shoes.

If you intend on buying and letting them loose in the house, you will need to maintain the house in a proper climate that they can live in. Its not like they will eat every insect.

I dont think I would try to establish a wild colony inside in an area that doesnt have them normally.
