Iggnorance of Pet stores compared to online retailers....Feeder Items.

bloodboy128 Jan 07, 2005 05:21 PM

I have a very nice pet shop in my asrea called world wide aquarium. It is highly based on reptiles. The only down side is there are a lot of wild caught animals. But my favorite part is they sell ;live and frozen feeders for cheap. When i feed my snake arbbits aroun d6 1/2 to 7 ft. I was going to start off with a 2 lb. rabbit every 2 weeks. MY pet store dont weigh them or anything they just hand you any size feeder rabbit and send you off. Are and other pet stores around anyone else like that? I even ask them to measure it and they just say no you take what you get they dont even let me pick one out? Does anyone else buy from their pet store and not online? Thanks,
Jake

ps: i Know this isn't related but someone told me once they switch to rabbits it feeds once every 2 weeks on rabbits 1/8 their weight.....at 18 months old its once every 3 weeks rabbits 1/7-1/8 their weight...and finally at 2 years and up you only feed on prey item a month at 1/5-1/6 thjeir body weight? Is that correct?

The pet store I go to is real gheto. I go in and hand pick whatever I want preety much. His prices are kind of wierd though. Sometimes a jumbo rat is $3 and sometimes its $6. He breeds his own rabbits so sometimes he has a good size for me and sometimes I gotta wait a week or 2 for them to grow or whatnot.

I frequent another petshop on the same street in my city and he does not let you pick out your feeders. He doesn't even let you see the facilities he keeps them in, its in the basement. I think its because the conditions are too horrible to let customers see ya know.

I have never dealt with a pet store like that. They let me pick out what I need or I tell them what I need, and I get that size. Here is what you do to those people. You ask them for the rabbit the size you need it. If they come out with one that is not the size, say no thanks I asked for one this size. And leave and come back in later or just stay there until they get you what you want and keep saying louder and louder hello I said this size. They will get the picture, and if they don't people will see around you that they are not helpful and it will only hurt them and if they kick you out, then forget them, go find another pet shop around, some of the smaller stores are a lot nicer (people) because they need you and your money. I know you asked about on-line but there are a few people I buy from and its 50lbs for 50 bucks and you say the size. Rodent Pro has pics to.

As far as feeding, when my burm got 6 or 7 ft I started with the 2 pound rabbits every week. I did that for I want to say a year, size up rabbits went up and somtimes two rabbits. Then I am now feeding her one rabbit every two weeks. Rob Carmichael has some posts in here about that. He is very helpful.

I'm trying to figure out, that for someone who has just had problems feeding a med rat, why you'd be so concerned about feeding rabbits already.
Worry about feeding your burm now...not six months from now.Not a year from now.
Just now.
You should be worried about a vendor that sells the appropriate sized prey for your burm.
