Thanks for the updated name Wolfgang. I am not an expert on Asian snakes and my identification was due to serendipity. I visited San Diego Zoo in the summer where they have a speciemen. The snake made a great impression on me because it seemed different from other pit vipers in the region. Unfortunately I could only admire it through the glass in the exhibition.

I bet it did - I saw a couple close-up for the first time last summer in a private collection - aren't they the most incredible snakes?
