For people wondering when they start producing sperm.....

bachman Jan 07, 2005 08:15 PM

I've got a male het albino that was hatched on 7-24-04 by Jyohe & is 384 grams, I popped sperm plugs out of him tonight. It's a question that comes up every now & then, so I thought I would let those of you that wanted to know know.

Now thats good feedback.

A friend of mine has a pastel male around the same hatch date/weight,and he is the question mark for the projects this year.

Thanks

I have no intentions of breeding him this year, I'm waiting for the pastel to start producing sperm (since I only have a few girls to try this year). The pastel is a month younger, and about the same weight (10-15 grams lighter) but nothing yet.

...that's what's important...

...there's an interval between no sperm and viable sperm that all males go through...but it's still pretty revealing to see such a small male producing plugs!!

No idea if it's viable, but he is producing sperm. Is there a reason it would not be viable sperm?

Thanks,

I think most Ball's will start producing viable sperm before they know what to do with it...LOL. I wasn't saying he would reproduce or even breed right now, just saying he is producing sperm plugs.

I have bred (or at least tried) a few young males. Most of the time, they hid in the corner. From my observations, there is an intimidation factor. In the wild, IMHO, I suspect females breed with the largest, strongest males. While smaller hatchlings will rarely breed. I have an adult albino male that is a great breeder. He had no interest in breeding until he reached the 1000 gram mark even though he was producing sperm as early as 600 grams. His first two years of breeding - from 650 grams to just under 1000 grams, he sired nothing.

I have an `04 Male Pastel Pos. Het Ghost that is 340 grams that is producing sperm, as well as a Cinnamon (unproven Line) that is 392 grams that is producing sperm. Hopefully they both will know what to do coming up in a few months. I had put them both with females to see what would happen and of course they have no clue yet.
