beardie digging

jbelcher Jan 07, 2005 08:35 PM

I have had my beardie "homer" since April of 2004, so "he" is not quite a year yet. Anyway, "he" keeps digging around his enclosure, moving the sand around and making large mounds everywhere. Anyone know the cause of this? is this normal for them to be doing a such a young age?? i appreciate any help that can be given.
Thanks in advance.
Jason

I dont think its anything to worry about. Beardeds just love to dig around. Do you have hides on both sides of the enclosure? How large is his cage? He may be looking for a better hiding spot. Maybe he's just bored. I know I'd be bored as hell just sitting in a cage all day. LoL . I have a few beardeds who dig around like its going out of style.

or perhaps "He" is a "She" and wants to dig a hole to lay eggs?

how sure are you of the gender??

he possibly could be a she, however, can they lay eggs without being with another beardie? and he/she, i have only had since april.. is it about time for that process to begin?

Just Like a Chiken!

they can, how often? I am not sure....

you can search this message board and there are posts with info on how to check the sex of the dragon.

but if you get a lay box and the dragon digs a hole and lays then you know for sure

normaly I think 1 year old and after .... but some have been reported to be able to breed before 1 year of age.

Bearded dragons can lay infertile eggs before their first year of life. It isn't common but it can happen. To determine if she does have eggs, gently feel her stomach and sides, you should be able to feel eggs if they are nearly fully developed. They also get a wider look to them.

It is also very easy to sex dragons that are as old as yours. Place him onto a flat surface or your hand, facing away from you and lift the tail up about 90 degrees and gently turn it side to side. Look at the area the tail joins the body, just before (tail side) the vent. If you see one lump it's a female, if two, then it's a male.
