Sonoran gopher feeding trouble

caecilianman02 Jan 07, 2005 09:34 PM

Hi there:

I bought a large baby Sonoran gopher in December of 2001, and still have him today. He has grown a little over 3 feet long, so I guess you could consider him a juvenille. Until now I have kept him in a 75-gallon desert vivarium, and he was eating fine. Then, something happened.
Earlier this fall, he started pacing back and forth repeatedly across the huge cage. I gave him tons of rocks and climbing areas and hot sand and such, but he seemed to be going crazy. He has not eaten since December. He used to be a ferocious feeder, but now he just crushes the prey item into the substrate and continues pacing.
Cruel as it may sound, I decided to move him to a smaller, warmer and more secure enclosure with more hides. He is now in a 20-gallon, and stopped pacing, He coiled up in a hide like he used to be. Now I will offer him food again. I hope he eats. He is extremely gentle, and I even let children handle him at shows.

HI Dave
If he donesn't eat in his new cage , I would suggest Hibernation . He may sence winter is here . I have alot of snakes of various species that quit feeding in late fall and early winter . I just hibernate them for a couple months .When I warm them back up in spring they usally have good feeding responce .

Man you have alot of different critters . I have only seen one Western Green Toad but it was really cool .

Take care .

Jason
