Burmation question....????

SERPENTBOY Jan 08, 2005 03:01 AM

How goes it...Herpers... I was wondering if there is anyone out there that has bred with a good outcome, from not cooling at all or only cooling say a month or so....? Now I have done this in corns bred with awesome results and never once cooled them... But Im wondering about kings...? Reason I ask is I have recently moved... And I cant cool my snakes as ezy and as cold as i once could. & with this crazy Tx weather, snowing one day 80 degrees the next.... Im having a hard time cooling... I can make other arrangements to cool them but I'd like to see what happens in breeding from these wacked out TX temps.... Or should I not...? any & all input would be gr8.... Pe@ce ...Mike

Hi Mike,
If you get answers encouraging you to breed w/o brumating, keep us posted on the results.

But do be aware you can do a dandy job of brumating your kings by turning off the lights, witholding food, and letting them experience those snow-day temps as well as the warm days. IMHO.

Terry, thanx for the reply... I have yet to be encouraged to try to breed them with out cooling them.... I was just wondering about the temps being low for only a very short period of time.. But my plans were to do just as you said.. I was however curious to hear from someone that has had good breedings with a brief burmation... Pe@ce.... Mike

I asked a similar question: Minimum brumation time (on 28 Dec.) See post below (near bottom of this page). Bluerosy (Rainer) told me 2 weeks or even less!!! The shortest that I have tried was 4 weeks I believe. But I usually go longer, cause it gives me a little time off from the snakes and more time with the WIFE and kids during winter. They DO appreciate it! That is why I still have the same wife I had 20 years ago, LOL (knock on wood)!

It is just hard in these crazy Tx temps... Thanx for the input... & man are you right about the break, My wife is begging for a good break from all the herps so we can do stuff with the kids etc.... Thanks! I know about THAT crazy weather, LOL! Where in TX do you live? I bought a house in Killeen many years ago (when I was stationed at Ft. Hood), currently renting it out while I'm now living in NC., near Fayetteville).
I will be visiting TX this spring (in April)!
