UTH questions, they are new to me

cmsuphoto Jan 08, 2005 08:22 AM

Ok, I'm used to using lighting as a heat source, so I'm curious about UTH's. I use aspen as bedding, so would I actually be putting the heating pad/tape in the tank/barr's cage, or would it be under the cage/tank? Is there something special you are supposed to use, or can you buy the heating pads from Walgreens just fine?

Thanks in advance! Anyone still helpin' me with my cage dilema, read below! I'm the guy (sucker) that got engaged.

They go under the cage/tank. I don't have any experience using human heating pads like you can get at WalMart. I am paranoid that they will start a fire cause I don't think they are made to be on 24/7. All of mine are made for use under reptile cages.

Hope this helps!

If you're still thinking about using a heating pad instead of an UTH, they weren't meant to be on for that long of a time. BUT I haven't seen any problems with the ones we use at the wildlife rehab center where I work. We leave them on 24/7 for weeks or months at a time for our baby mammals and all the reptiles. Yes, you're going to be leaving yours on for longer than that with a pet snake probably, but just the same, we've never had any problems.

** Note: I should probably cover my ass and say that I don't accept responsibility if anybody burns their house down trying to use a heating pad just because we haven't had any problems with them. Use them at your own risk **
