Silica Playsand

Triad Jan 08, 2005 09:48 AM

Does anyone here have silica playsand in their uromastyx' home?

I was thinking about changing Ares and Apollo's regular washed playsand and putting in silica sand instead.

Those big chunks in the regular worry me, and since they eat off of a paper plate they never get their food on the ground.

I just want to know if any of you use this and if so if you have a picture you can post so I can see what it looks like.

One thing comes to mind with the silica sand....

Cha-Ching!

Other then that, I had no problems with it when I tried it.

I believe silica sand absorbs moisture, considerably more so than normal playsand. This would concern me because when they ingest it the sand may actually pull water OUT of their system, and swell inside of them. Also as a side note, I have silica sand in a pendulum that I have, one of those ones that draw in the sand under the pendulum, and the silica sand came with big warnings not to touch it. I believe this was just to keep the sand from absorbing moisture out of my hand and clumping, but I am not sure.

Just my thoughts though, not researched.
