Lighting Intensity Question

heffepm Jan 08, 2005 10:16 AM

I have recently upgraded from a 10 gallon tank to a 20 gallon high tank (lizard lounge with side vents). I have 2 green anoles. I’m worried that my lights may no longer be sufficient. Besides my full spectrum UVA/UVB light, I’m using a 40W Sun Glo Daylight lamp and a 25W red basking night light. Should I increase the wattage?

The bulb wattage is irrelevent. What you need to do is measure the temperature at the basking spot. It should be between 85-92 degrees. The wattage of the bulb will depend on the distance between it and the basking spot and whether or not you can maintain that temperature range. UVA/UVB bulbs emit UV radiation to a distance of approximately 12" (maximum). If you have an area for them to bask and get UVA/UVB that is within 6-12" of the UV bulb you will be fine.
BTW, all of the fancy basking bulbs serve only to get some extra $$ for the manufacturer. Regular light bulbs will provide adequate daytime heat for reptiles. Just use a thermometer to maintain proper basking temperatures and a proper temperature gradient throughout the enclosure so the Anoles can thermoregulate. A 20-gallon will be much easier to maintain a cool side and a warm side than your 10-gallon was.
The nighttime temperature in the enclosure should be allowed to drop to 65-68 degrees. Unless you keep your house unusually cool, you shouldn't need any additional heat at night. Room temperature will be just fine.

I have 2 anoles housed in a 25 gallon tall tank. I just use a regular 60 watt light for a basking spot. Then I have a 5.0 repti sun UVB light. Thats it. They have branches all over the tank and near the lights so they can bask and get their UVB. The lights are on timers for like 12 hours on/12 hours off. The temp near the basking light is like 85-90. Near the bottom of the tank its in the 75 degree range. At night when the lights go out the temp drops to in the 70's (what ever our room temp is). They are doing great with this setup.
