Need Advise on Taming Tupinambis teguixin

AdamDispenza Jan 08, 2005 10:51 AM

I just got a Columbian Tegu from a local reptile dealer. I went in the place knowing that these tegus have a mean streak and are not as easily tamed as their Argentines cousins, but I've tamed some other so called "untamable" herps, so I'm up for the challenge. This little guy is only a young one being about a foot from tip of nose to tip of tail. I've seen a few ads in the Kingsnake classifieds of "tame" columbians for sale, so I know that its possible and I'm not just wasting my time.

Now here is my question, how would I go about taming a Columbian Tegu? Is it anything like taming young Nile Monitors? My first thought is it involves alot of handling. What else would you suggest? Thanks. And have a terrific tegu day.

Adam

There are many ways to do it and many people have their own method. This is My Method.

It has been used with success and I hope it helps you out. Let me know either way.

Let me reinforce that the tegu can not bite through a decent pair of welders gloves so do not fear it. If at any point the tegu bites you, do NOT pull away. First this teaches the tegu that biting you does work to drive you away, second it may cause physical damage to the tegus mouth and jaws.
I agree completely. I have a Columbian and he is a sweetheart. Saying that a Columbian is the most aggressive is like saying pitbulls always kill people, its just a stereotype. My Columbian USED to be mean, but with some TLC they can turn out to be dog tame. Do exactly what was listed above on the other post. Also (I didnt read all the info on the previous post) cold hands and tegus dont mix.
