Newbie to leopard geckos - pics of newest pets

felanmoira Jan 08, 2005 01:11 PM

Hi- I'm Holly, a thirty year old "zoo" keeper.

I just purchased these beauts a week ago (at a pet store). Any ideas on which morphs they might be would be welcome - they are hatchlings - a little over 2.5 inches long.

They are in a plastic "tank" with Calci-Sand as substrate and are currently being fed mealworms as I have those here at home. I'll be getting some crickets to feed as well (a 30 minute drive one way to buy crickets!) I also have an UTH and a coconut shell hide for them and a small water bowl. Anything else I might need to know? I'm waiting to see which sexes I have, and am prepared should I find I have 2 males (another tank is available).

I've been wanting leos for several years now and finally got the hubby convinced to let me have them. We've really been missing the iguana we had, but didn't have the room to give another ig.

Aren't these little guys beauts!!!!???!!!

Hi Holly,

You have a lovely pair of baby critters there

However, I don't think it's a good idea to keep them on any kind of sand. As some people on this forum have pointed out before, they could accidentily ingest some of it and become impacted and die. Paper towl or tile might be a safer option. A friend of mine had some very bad experiences with Calci-Sand not long ago and none of them ended well. Good luck with your two new family members!

Wow thats a pretty gecko. Is that a tangerine albino? I am new to leos so not sure of type you have but interested in that color.

Thanks. She's a hypo-tangerine. Got her from Desert Designers before they vanished.

Congrats! You will love them! Well you probably already do.

Morph: they are Normals, i.e., the normal form of leopard Gecko, yellow with black spots. (ok, yes, yes for you fanatics, yellow BODY and HEAD, white TAIL, covered in black spots).

You will love watching their black bands turn into spots. Every time they shed they'll look a little different. See, the one on the right looks like he/she is about 2 sheds ahead of the other one.

Also, the one on the left's tail looks a bit thin. It's tail should look like the other's. It could just be it needs to eat more. Sometimes when you have two together, one hogs the food. Be sure to watch for that. A thin tail can also mean that it's sick or has internal parasites so keep that in mind too.

Hope Thats not too much info.

Thanks for the suggestions

I went and bought some crickets today - since my mealworm beds only have little itty bitty worms right now. The leos have eaten about 9 crickets between the two of them today. How many should they be eating?

The one with the thin tail seems to have gained some in the tail since I got him, so he might have been bullied in the tank he was in (there were several babies together). And I noticed him out eating about 3:00 am this morning, so I know he's eating (I'm an insomniac - so the leos and the cornsnake make good company )

I understand about the impaction issue with the Calci-Sand - I'm gonna research it a bit more and decide if I'm tossing it.

I'm still really hoping I have a male and female, so I might eventually have babies. I'm already hooked!
