Had to put a turtle to sleep and was wondering if anybody knew what happened...

His neck was swollen, with a red spot under his chin and he just layed there limp. He was still alive when i noticed him, but there was no bringing him back. I didnt take him to a vet, so i dont know what was wrong. If anybody has any clue to what might have been wrong, i would greatly appreciate it.

Sounds like some sort of infection that may have spread. Sorry about the poor little guy. Hope you had a humane way of doing him in.

BTW -- For anyone who may not know this putting your turtle in the freezer is NOT a painless death for them.

Usually, bite injuries result in a local lesion that will heal with time and local topical antibiotic application, but ocassionally, a diffuse cellulitus and swelling develops under the loose skin of the neck. This requires a course of injectible antibiotics and, even after the injections, it takes additional time to resolve.

At times. after an untreated infection anywhere on the body or an ifection of SCUD, and overwhelming septicemia develops, marked by the production of bacterial gas that bloats the turtle everywhere. At this point, the liver and internal organs are probably involved and the prognosis is usually hopeless.
