Hey folks,
Do tortoises shed scutes as they grow much like their aquatic cousins? Are topical ointments (Vitashell) safe and/or useful to use for keeping them looking all pretty?
Thanks!

I have never seen a tortoise shed scutes in the 7 years I've had them. That's 7 years with Russian torts, and about 3 with leopards.
Someone posted a couple weeks ago about Vitashell. I linked to a Tortoise Trust article that said these things were potentially harmful. My view is that there is no need for them. I soak my torts regularly when they are indoors, and clean their shells at that time. I've taken to using an old toothbrush to remove caked on gunk. I never use anything else except plain water.
When my animals are outdoors, rain and sunshine keep them clean, and I hose them off every once in awhile.
Thanks Brad. I presume, then, that the way to keep my leo tort's colors vivid is just with proper diet, lighting and soaks. Please chime in if there's anything I'm missing.
I second the water and toothbrush idea. I wish I had dig. pics of my young sulcatta, I'm often asked if I do oil/polish the shell.
