Winter baby

rattay Jan 08, 2005 06:03 PM

Wanted to share the gift I received today. One egg from a 9/2 clutch of 2 layed by my sole mature female cherryhead began to hatch today. I'll post an update when the baby is fully out.

It's very exciting as this female only began to lay eggs for the first time in July. The second egg does not appear to be good but we shall see.

Cheers!

Paul

Nice going Rattay. I told you those eggs would be good. Can't wait to see the head!

Now you are addicted. You will never get tired of seeing these little gems bust out of their eggs.

Paul, this is wonderful!
It must feel great to have your first Cherryhead hatching! What a beautiful little guy!
I remember the picture you sent me in summer, where the female was digging her nest.
Good luck with raising the little guy,

Gaby

Paul did I understand.. that yours are from Sept. 2nd eggs? I'm still waiting for July 30th eggs.. Guyana x Columbia. What temperatures were they incubated?

Thanks..

Hi Terry,

All the eggs are incubating between 84 & 86 as the temps fluctuate in my basement. I have some July eggs also that have not hatched. Carl told me that he has had some wide variance in incubation time, some in the 300 day range.

This is officially my first tortoise hatchling as all my past breeding experience has been with indigenous species of turtles, primarily box and woods. Turtle eggs are consistent compared to torts as I have found so far.

Cheers.

Hi Paul,

Isn't that the truth.. I don't know what your numbers look like.. but at this rate.. once they start hatching.. I'll have "baby pictures" until August.. and then the cycle will (almost said start over).. continue on! Must have something to do with the fact they don't hibernate?

Now that they are all "acclimated".. I'm getting an average of 4-5 eggs from all my females every 10 weeks or so.

Tortoises sure aren't like spotted turtles.. @ 87-88 F.. 48 days almost to the hour.. female babies "pip".. and the next day they'd be running around in the incubator! Doesn't get any better than that.

Keep up the good work girls!!!

Love those redfoots..

Terry
