leopard activity level at night?

Ritas Jan 08, 2005 07:09 PM

Hi
I dont have any leopard geckos but reading on them looking into them. I wanted to know if in a 4ft enclosure with hide areas, etc would you see them much at night or do they mostly hide day and night?
I wanted a naturalistic enclosure with rock caves and such would they even use them ?
Do you see yours much at night?
Thanks.

Leos are nocturnal although alot of mine will come out whenever I walk into the room. It does depend on the leos though, I got a BLizzard about 2 months ago and I ahve eyt to see her come out and eat during the day. She is gaining weight and pooping though so I'm assuming that she's eating while I'm asleep. Yes, your gecko will use the caves, except for an occasional leo that loves weird places to sleep (I've encountered quite a few sleeping standing up). Leos are often very active at night so using a red light bulb would help you see them and observe them without them being bothered. Are you planning on using sand? I'm asking this question because you said you wanted a natural looking cage. Often this is where people mess up and get sand because they think there is nothing else that would give a natural look to the cage. Tile is very natural looking, easy to clean, cheap, and is very safe for your leo. Good luck!

I am planning on using that calci sand that they say is safe if ingested. I never thought of tile but how will they dig in tile.
I bought a book on desert terrariums by Philipe Vosjoli and want to set up something along those lines.
Something these geckos would enjoy.

I agree with Peach. They will get used to you and come see you when you come up to the cage sometimes. Mine will eat when ever food is in the tank. I have a 55g tank with sand and caves, like you said you wanted. They love it, its cool have alot of leo's in one tank, its like watching an ant farm(thats the tank with my male and his ladies). I use sand called Calci Sand or Vet Sand. Its just Calcium that is colored. So if they eat it, its all ok and even good for them. My female is a cluts and will grab a mouth full of the sand and thats great for her egg development.

Good luck, you would love a leo, they are very night active and even day active if you play your cards right with the food.

Very sorry but I COMPLETELY disagree with the calci sand issue. It's not just "colored calcium". It's sand with calcium in it and it's just as deadly as regular sand. I wouldn't be surprised if any day now you have to take your leo to the vet becuse she's impacted. Ritas, I would not take the risk. Leos are great pets and their safety is way more important than making your cage look good with sand. I don't want to start the whole "sand" issue again but I do want to give my opinion. Thanks for reading and please think about what I just said.

I see that this calci sand issue has two different opinions, experiences with it. I have a book that saids sand is safe but see some here dont agree while some do like it.
I will have to read more on this. Nothing is set up yet nor any type set up written in stone . I have the tank already 55 gallon and stand, Dual 40 watt plant bulbs for the soft non prickly cactuses but thats it so far.

depends on the leo. some are active all the time, and some like to be in their hide a lot. you wont really know until you observe your own.

Okay thank you.
