Mites!!

ZooHerp Jul 04, 2003 09:44 AM

I was spot cleaning my pac mans terrarium out today and I noticed there was a very tiny white fly crawling around in his poop. I keep him in my room and the window is always open so the fly eaisily could have gotten in that way. If anyone knows of a product that kills mites but wont hurt my animal please let me know. Also any advise on what to do would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Cody

Hi,

The most common little (under 3mm) white insects found in amphibian cages are springtails. They are harmless to amphibians but are a sign that the cage is either too moist or needs to be cleaned. They feed on rotting things. They are great for use in a tropical terrarium because they help break down waste.

The other thing that they could be is small maggots of flies. We had an infestation of those at work in our tarantula cages. A cage cleaning with a 10% bleach solution will kill them but you will need to make a temporary home for your frog while its cage is being washed out and then drying for 24 hours to get rid of any left over bleach. Good luck,

Hey Devin thanks for the help. The bugs deffiently had wings and I cant find any larve so I dont think theres a maggot problem. I have a Tropic aire humidifier and air exchanger along with bi weekly mistings to keep the substrate moist. The humidity varies from 80 to 90%. I think thats about right, the frog seems happy and is a very good eater, feeding on large crickets and soon mabye pinky mice. I checked out your website. VERY COOL. I especially like your slanted front lizard lounge terrarium, and might even try to copy your design some day.
Thanks again, Cody

Put a flea collar in the cage.
