Brumating or sick?

Aeromeggy Jan 09, 2005 12:08 AM

I have a 3 year old beardie, Jax. She has never brumated before, but this year we had built her a cage downstairs where the temps actually get lower at night and she started slowing down in eating and sleeping a lot about 3 weeks ago, so I thought she was brumating. However today I noticed her fat pad are becoming sunken in, so I'm concerned. I am worried that what I think is brumating (which I've never experienced before) may actually be illness. Any ideas?

Double check the temperatures, especially in her basking spot. If the basement is cooler then her basking spot may not be getting as warm as it should be. ALso, the change in cage and environment could also be stressing her. It would be a good ideal to get a fecal done, just to make sure the stress of the change didn't cause an overload of parasites.

depleted fat pads are not good. Make sure your BD stays hydrated and keep the cage temp up basking 105 cool side 80, lights on 12 hrs and try to get him to eat. If you need to force feed use rep cal pellets soaked in gatorade or pedialite cut with 50% water.
