When to move baby into 55 gallon?

tanmuscles Jan 09, 2005 01:10 AM

I have a 6 inch beardie in a 10 gallon tank right now. He's always running around the tank and clawing at the glass, likes bored with the small tank. I plan to put him in a 55 gallon tank when he's a bit bigger and probably custom build a cage with a bigger footprint farther down the road. I always hear that babies should be kept in small enclosures, when should i move him into the bigger tank?

10 gallons are really horrible tanks for any size beardie because they are usually too small to create an appropriate heat gradient. He'll do great in a 55 gallon. The reason some people don't have as good of luck in the bigger tanks with smaller reptiles is because they don't set it up right. Just put lots of tight, low hiding places where the dragon can go to feel secure when he needs. It can also help to feed in a seperate container so that the dragon doesn't have to chase crix all over the big tank, but sometimes they have not problem running back and forth. Remember, in the wild there isn't a limit to their space as there is in captivity. The difference is that in the wild their environment is just right. In captivity their environments are often barely acceptable.
