Hibernating Beardie?

Winddragon Jan 09, 2005 03:51 AM

I'm sort of a newcomer to lizard care and I have a beardie as my first lizard to call my own (my wife has 4 lizards: 2 gekos and 2 water dragons). He has a little log with a cave underneath it and the past couple of weeks he's not been coming out very much. My father in law mentioned that he might be hibernating. I was just wondering if anyone has any ideas on what might be going on with him. And do Beardies hibernate?

Dragons do brumate. What are the temperatures in the cage, both air and basking spot? How old is the dragon? Has it had a recent fecal? What kind of substrate are you using? Does he look well fed with noticeable fat pads (on the head, just behind the eyes) and wide tail base?

His high end is 90 degrees F. 80 degrees F on the low end. Feeding him Bearded Dragon food. With crickets dusted with calcium powder occasionally. I'm guessing he's about a year old. Fat pads look good. He has a wide tail base. However before we got him he lost one of his back feet and the tip of his tail. That's how l got him was to nurse him back to health. I've had him about 4 months or so. Last fecal was probably 3 days ago. He's been hibernating since then.

It should be around 105. Improperly digested food can cause a myriad of problems. What did the fecal show?

As for brumation, here's an article I wrote that might help

brumation
