My turtle Just Laid and Egg

GunnerMan Jan 09, 2005 11:21 AM

Well after about 2 or 3 years of the male trying to mate with her I guess he succeded this time because I woke up this morning and found an egg! Well heres the sad part.. it was on the surface and it got kind od dryed out so I gave it a quick spray of water. It had a very small dent on one end and on one side there was a large dend going almost to the yoke..I dont think it damaged the yoke at all so we put it in a plastic shoe box type thing with some damp newspaper at the botom then we put a thin layer of pete moss then the egg and another thin layer of moss and put a lid with holes on it and put it in our pantry. Here is the question: Are large dents like this normal and do you think it will survive. Will my turle lay more than 1, this egg was very big or so we thought. Last but not least is there anything else I should do IE sepparate the male from the cage or anything I should do to the egg.. thanks

eggs laid on the surface are often infertile, and damaged, but thats not to say dont try to incubate it, air holes aren't needed during incubation.. if nothing else it'll just cause humitidy problems, I'd put the container ontop of the fridge, as for the dents they can be caused by the egg being infertile or just lack of humidity, and just because you're getting eggs doesn't mean anything will come of them, depending on the subspecies you keep the adults may not even be fertile since they're not brumating, and laying eggs on the surface is a sign of stress, dont mean to burst your bubble, just dont get your hopes up.
