major problems

yellermelon Jan 09, 2005 11:58 AM

ok, so ive been keeping leos for about 3 years now, i have built a decent collection. I use to post on this forum very often. Now i have a huge problem. i am loosing all my leo one by one. Ive been to 3 differnet vets...that every reptile vet in driving distance. they honestly do not know whats going on. I was hoping somone on here had expeirienced this and found a way to fix it. ill describe symptoms first then post pics. OK first is bumps around eye or mouth mostly around eye, big bumps. Then eye becomes cloudy and usually closes. then the head and upper body shed repetivaly. at first i was soaking them in water thinking mabey it had become to dry but not a day later and they were shedding again. theres mucas or oozy stuff coming from eye, puss or somthing the mouth bumps usually gets worse they cant see to eat so they get skinny and ive already lost 3 to this and 6 of my other show symptoms i have moved the 2 that are symptomless to different rooms in a different house. now cages have been thoughrolly cleaned because one vet said it was hygien, but that didnt work, he also gave me some antibiotics that didnt work. any ideas are apprewciated. thanks, yeller

Ah that is awful, I'm so sorry for you and your leos. Well I'm not a vet but pus in the mouth means mouth rot (stomatitis) to me. If none of your vets has mentioned mouth rot to you then you need a new vet, IMO. Again I'm not a vet but it sounds like they have a massive internal bacterial infection of some kind. Have the vets done any kind of culture? What antibiotic did they prescribe? And what state do you live in? Maybe someone here could help you find a diff vet.

well, actually one vet did mention mouth rot, but said he didnt think this was mouth rot. and how exactly would it be passed from room to room in my house and from cage to cage. i kept these animals in 3 seperate rooms and most except 2 that were grouped all in different cages? im in south carolina. near charlotte, ive been to a vet in charlotte, columbia, and rock hill

wow, I dont know what else to tell you. What do the vets suggest you do now?

One other thing, you might try posting this over on the Herp Health forum. All the posts are about diseases questions etc. I dont follow that forum, so I dont know if it's any good, but maybe you can get some answers there....

First of all, I am not a vet, but I would say it definately looks like something viral or fungal, maybe you should try looking into some information regarding reptilian herpes - not common, but a possibility. As far as how did it spread, one of the most common causes of these type of diseases is feeder animals, ie. your crickets, mealworms, etc. Your supplier could have gotten a bad batch and then each insect is infected, and once it is put in your reptile's cage, it in turn, affects the reptile. Out of curiosity, where do you get your feeders from?
