injured female uromastyx

gexy Jan 09, 2005 12:10 PM

This is the second part of my newest addition which I'm not as thrilled about. She has many bites from the larger aggressive male. I don't know why the former owner kept thm together for so long. He says this is normal behavior for malis during breeding. I wouldn't know, I've never bred malis. My saharans bred last season and the female was fine. She only had a couple of bite marks on her neck that healed. This female has what I call severe bites on both sides of her belly that seem to be healing OK. Is there anything I can put on the wounds to help them heal faster with less scarring?

I don't have experience with severe injuries, but Neosporin works fine for keeping smaller wounds free of infection. Whatever you use, I would suggest keeping her on a non-particulate substrate until she heals - to keep the injuries clean. Personally, I would get her to a vet, since I've not dealt with ugly wounds.

Congrats on your new acquisitions! It's too bad the poor girl is so beat up.

I can't believe the previous owner would not look at her and know that she's way too thin, and figure out that something is wrong. Good luck with her recovery.

Clean the wounds with Betadyne first, you can use a cotton roll. This is messy stuff but great! You can get it at any pharmacy, OTC. Then apply the Neosporin or Triple Biotic ointment, also OTC. And yes, keep her warm and on newspaper till the wounds are closed up and dry. This should work well, and are supplies you should always have on hand anyway.
Hope she heals well, she should! Thanks for caring for her!

I agree with Jimbo... she is way to thin. I would make a vet trip asap and have a fecal test done and have him look at her wounds. I'm sure with some TLC she will be fine.
