Indoor Sulcata Egg Laying

Sadprincess Jan 09, 2005 03:59 PM

My 9 year old 19 inch female sulcata began laying eggs. There is 6 inches of snow on the ground so outdoor burrowing is out of the question. I've been reading about the problems of egg- binding and retention until a sutible nest sight is avaliable, and am concerned for the health of the mother. So far she has dropped (not buried)6 eggs in sets of three at night, a day apart.Egg survival is not important as all eggs will be aborted. Can anyone offer advice as to accomadating nesting prefrences indoors? Thank You.

I saw a neat set up yesterday at an animal sanctuary. It might work depending on the space you have a available.

They had a space about 5' x 8' sectioned off in their barn with a couple of 2x6 boards laying sideways on top of each other to it made a wall about 12" high. There was a ramp tht took up about half of the length of the boards and it was covered with roofing shingles for traction. The entire 5' x 8' section was filled with sand that the sulcatas loved digging in. Fill it with a dirt/sand mixture and the female may find it good for nesting.

Good luck!
