Toe Shedding Problem/ question/idea

momtowildones Jan 09, 2005 05:04 PM

Here's my dilema-- I switched all of my adult leopard cages to tile. Looks great, easy to cleam, but now it seems that the leos are having major problems getting theri sheds off of their little toes! I have spent alot of time soaking and using tweezers to get the sheds off! Yes they have a humid hide.

I an guessing that when they were on sand the abrasiveness of the sand helped get the shed off of the toes!

Here's my thought Do you think putting a piece of sand paper in their enclosure might help? It couldn't harm them could it? Any other ideas out there that might help them with thier toes? I t is almost all of my adult leopards. The juvies are still on paper towels and don't seem to be having them same probs.

Thanks for your input!

i dont know about putting sand paper in there. you dont want them scraping their little tummies or tails. maybe you could use a peice of cork? thats stuff have some grip to it. My guess, rather than scraping their toes helping, (mine seem to bite it off), I'd say the tile might be sucking the moisture out of their humid hides? I know terra cotta and some other natural materials suck up moisture like nobody's business.

I would not think that the sand paper would be a good idea. Probably end up irritating the pads of thier feet and then you would end up running into problems with them being able to hunt and exercise and the situation would worsen. Plus I dont know how they make sandpaper but there maybe some type of glue or chemical added. I use paper towel for all of mine, humid hide (I keep them pretty moist) ect. and generally do not have any problems. Gadzooks
