I believe Albino males are selling for a little more than $800. The lowest I've seen was $1200 and that was a guy who desperately needed the cash. Usually they're more like $2000 to $2500. I'm not a breeder myself, but I know that lowering prices just to makes sales is not good for the business overall.

I would say go for the het for albino...

Personally I would get the het male. Is this the het female the one you said that you got for $95 at the show? If so it may not be a female, as female 100% het for albinos go for much more than $200 males however are about $200. Make sure you know the correct sex if you plan on breeding, before you buy. Also did you get any papers with it? And will you be getting any with the new snake a good blood line is worth the price. And lastly, remember that statistically out of a clutch of 4 you may get one albino, but there is also a very good chance that you get 4 normal looking snakes that aren't in great demand. It may take a couple of breedings for the genes to roll in your favor. Just my two pennies.

I may be wrong but it looks like it is saying that your snake is the product of breeding an albino het male to a female black back. Retail price $200. Call him and make sure what you got also make sure you know what sex it is befoer you buy another, you don't want to waste your money. The retail on a 100% het albino female should be around $800-$900. Know for sure before you buy another.

Hate to break it to you but a "circle with an arrow going down" is the symbol for a male. The symbol for a female is a circle with what looks like a plus sign or a cross connected to it.

If your papers say female and give the symbol for a male and you only paid $95 for it I would definitely get it probed to find out which it is.

Sometimes, things are exactly as they appear...sometimes.

I would say it is a 50% poss het albino (het albino X black back) and get it sexed to be certain cause the O-> is a symbol for male and O- is the symbol for female.

I say don't buy the het male just for the sake of breeding unless that’s what you really want to do.

It's your purchase so buy what you like the most, it's your decision.

He could have meant that "het for albino" was 50% het. A 50% het for albino female for $95 isn't too bad. I just bought a 100% het for albino male for $200 last week. I'd still be happy with the buy if I bought a 50% het female for $95. I might even be happy buying a normal female for $95. I see in the classifieds people selling their normal female pet ball python for $400 just because they can get away with it, or they just think their snake is "pretty".

It's all good, get which snake you want most.

toshamc Jan 10, 2005 06:00 PM

That's true, but since he said he was thinking about breeding the snake, it's important for him to know what hes got. From what I can decipher that was written on the package it does look like a 50% albino which could means that it either carries the albino gene or doesn't (I can't tell what sex it is). He thinks he has a 100% het albino female and could actually have a normal male for all he knows. What do you think the chances are that this 15 year old walks into a show and for $95 walks away with a $900 snake? Or worse yet, what if 6 months from now his mother gets tired of the frozen rats in her freezer and he has to get rid of the snake? He's going to end up selling it here and screwing someone over. Yes, it's great if you just are going to have this pet that you can take care of for 20-30 years it doesn't really matter what you've got as long as you like it, but look at how many snakes end up at rescues and shelters because teenagers (and adults) buy them but end up not being able to care for them properly.
