kyla123 Jul 04, 2003 11:09 AM

Today when i went to look at my chameleon I saw that thi tip of his tail is raw and has no skin. should i put neosporin on it. also I don't know how this happened as there are no crikets in the container and the lights are raised above the enclosore so the chameleon cant get burnt.
The chameleon is also going through a bad shed, somabe it rubbed the tail to much. HELP Please.

your humidity may not be high enuff if he's having probs shedding. neosporin will work for his tail, just make sure you keep applying it. If your room does not have a draft and is warm enuff , spray his body with the bottle on mist with warm water. do this for a few minutes. I noticed that they shed almost immdiately after a nice humid hot day outdoors. In va the humidity can get up to 100%.

if yur chameleon is having trouble shedding, they have this stuff you can spray on your lizard that helps it shed..i can't remember what it it called..but somebody else probably knows.

I looked it up, it's called Tropical Mist Spray. You can get it at Big Apple Herpetological

Here's the description: Formulated with Aloe Vera conditioners, it provides the ideal moisture balance for reptiles and their terrariums. Not only provides humidity but keeps reptiles skin moist which allows for proper shedding.

Good luck!

You don't really need to spend money on shedding ease type products. If your housing is correct and the air humidity, nutrition, etc is OK, your cham will shed just fine by itself. I am always very leery of spraying ANYTHING but water on a cham. It wasn't formulated for chams, they wouldn't have been exposed to such ingredients in the wild, and I don't want to take a chance that there is a bad reaction or eye trouble. It could be that your cham has a localized infection that is just now visible. Chances are it has been slowly developing for a while. Or, possibly he got it caught in screening or burned it? I think many of us find Polysporin rather than Neosporin works a bit better on herp skin, but either one is better than nothing in a pinch. Also, your vet could probably give you a sample of Silvadene ointment. It's commonly used to treat burns and will have good anti-infection effects too.

I think it if your cham is having trouble shedding..oyu should get that stuff. Many have triee it with success, if you dont want eyes problems, dont put it near their eyes. It may not have been supplied in nature..but animals in captivity usually live longer..medicine is supplied to us is the "wild" or w/e u want to call it. When an animal is in captivity, it is different than the wild, although people might think its the same and good enough...ppl dont even know for sure what a chameleon needs. i would really reccommend the product..it will help yur cham. Good Luck
