Help One of My Frogs Died!!

superalty Jan 09, 2005 09:42 PM

After returning home tonite, I proceeded to change the water in my tank when I noticed one of my frogs in the moss and it wasn't moving. They all looked fine this afternoon before I left, and now this one looks like it died days ago. What happened? Head sunken, lungs look black, abdomen looks black, extremly dry. Please help, I don't want my other 3 to come to the same fate.

Tank conditions:
75-80 degree temps
2 watering holes
Misted 2 times a day
Day/Night bulbs rotated daily
Pinhead crickets every 2-3 days (dusted w/ vitamins)
Water changed daily
Tank cleaned weekly

All of the above was recommended by pet shop.

What type of subsrait were you using? How dry was it? Do you know your humidity level? Were you only using crickets for feeding? Was he ingesting any subsrait when he went for a cricket?

Substrait was Spanish Moss recommended by the Pet Shop (not large chain, small shop that mainly does reptiles and amphibians). Only pinhead crickets for food with vitamin powder. Humidity is maintained about 70-72%. Do not know if substrait was ingested or not. Frog appeared normal only a few hours before.

Are you sure you accounted for all 4 of the frogs initially? I have to say that this little guy looks quite dried up to have been fine only hours before. Not sure what could cause this to happen so fast unless he fried directly under a light. It just doesn't seem that anything could dry him out so fast.

Yes all 4 frogs were accounted for by 2 people. The lamp sits about 18" above the tank.

I just saw the pic. the frog deffinally was cooked. First off get your frogs off the spanish moss and put them on coco fiber, eco earth, forest bed, bed a beast, etc. Because it doesn't dry up fast. Also i'm not sure, but I think that spanish moss drys up really fast. Whats the wattage on the bulbs that you are using. It should not be over 40 watts! Also how big is your water dish. Also what type of frog is he?
