Looks like I got another eggbounded one...ugh

dmlove Jan 09, 2005 10:08 PM

Well, the one female that I bought a few weeks ago (originated from Sundial Reptile, but bought from private "breeder" turns out to have eggs, and is in the beginning stages of dystocia. She was always a little dehydrated, and the vet gave her some calcium orally (NeoCalGlucon) and she didnt really get any better (at that point I didnt know she was eggbound, I thought that since I just had an eggbound female, what are the chances of buying another with dystocia, right? UGH!). She was eating off and on, now she is eating a bunch of silkies a day. I scheduled a vet appointment for the 17th, but when, this morning, I figured out she was eggbound, I called the emergency line and am bringing her down 45 minutes to my vet tomorrow after class. This morning I gave her a soak and after 15 minutes, when she sucked in her little gut, I could feel the eggs VERY clearly. They were firm but small. I didnt really feel any bound together, but she is beginning to drag her belly, just like Anna did before she became paralyzed. Im bummed because I thought I bought a perfectly good female. RRG. The vet tommorrow is going to do an overall check, and then give her lots of calcium injections there, along with some for me to give her here. We are going to wait a little, and if she shows no signs of improving, we may use a labor inducing injection for her, hopefully we can have her LIVE this time. I really hope she makes it through. She was digging earlier today, and of course I put her in the laying bin for HOURS and HOURS and she just sat there. Kind of frustrating. (By the way, this is a different vet then the one I brought Anna to. I figured out that, before, when Anna was paralyzed, that Neo Calglucon does NOTHING to help her in that far of a stage in the dystocia. It did her nothing, and she eventually died. Hopefully this vet can give me some insight, and save my baby.)

Well, sorry for the long post, hope all has a good night, and I will let you know what happens tomorrow!

A note I think anyone with egg producing females should know, always after a dragon HAS laid a clutch feel her belly and make sure there are none left. My female that I spoke of above, she had 2 clutches before we even noticed the two eggs which by that time were inside granulomas. She had pretty nasty fluid in her abdomen by then too, but she's magical we decided, vet brags about her as very surprising success, or just tough. Two weeks of baytril and she's still here over a year later. NO babies for her though, ovaries went bye-bye. NOw she's a grandma though.

Thanks for the advice Thera. Im glad you are on the forum. I hope to become an avian/ exotic reptile vet when I get into college :P . I think I judged too soon with Sunny, but I was so freaked out by the death of Anna that I judged too soon. Regardless, she still looks dehydrated (IM DISSAPOINTED with the previous keeper), so I hope she can pass these eggs alright.

Thanks again

Thera Jan 10, 2005 07:01 PM

I had a female that had produced about 7 clutches and instead of normal dystocia problems, she had 2 ectopic eggs, meaning they weren't in her ovaducts anymore, they had "wandered" into her abdominal cavity. She required emergency surgery and I had her spayed. Just kinda an interesting story. I still have the eggs in a jar along with her ovaries, mostly because I'm weird like that.

I would probably start deciding now what is more important to you, having a breedable animal or having a healthy animal. Often times if they get bound they will get bound again. You might just want to opt for surgery and get her spayed if you don't mind the cost of surgery and wouldn't mind having just a pet dragon.

Also if you were sold a dragon that was egg bound I would contact your seller. I would consider that a definate pre-existing health concern and at least get your money back for her.

I doubt though she'll be any worth as a breeder though, as I said, normally once they get bound they're done.

Thanks again Thera. The guy I bought it from wasnt really a breeder, but I will contact him if that is the case. I hope she pulls through. Haha thats funny about keeping the ovaries and eggs, knowing me I probably would have done that too!

I already have one "pet" dragon, not spayed, but not a breeder. I definetly wouldn't mind another, but the cost of the surgury may be an issue. If the dragon does turn out to be eggbound, I will probably loan the money from somewhere and do it to end it all! (Actually, I have the money saved up just in case, but Im such a money hoard! I hate spending it!)

LOL well Ill talk to you later, thanks for the advice.
