Question about hatchling setups......>>>

Cleopatra Jul 04, 2003 11:27 AM

I setup the hacthling enclosure today and I was wondering if it was okay (I have never done this before and want to make sure the babies have everything they need).
It is a 10 gallon tank set in a quiet, dim area on the counter behind a bar that we have downstairs (the adults tanks are ontop of the bar). This way they won't be bothered. I have a UTH on a rheostat for heat. The substrate is paper towels and there are four hides...a humid hide (w/paper towels) and dry hide over the UTH and two smaller dry hides in the cool section of the tank. I made the dry hides out of paper cups (just cut them down to size, flipped them over, and put doors in them) so they are small and cozy to make the babies feel secure. They have the bottom of a paper cup for miner-all and mealies. Finally, they have a large jar lid (about an inch deep) for a water dish.
Is that an okay setup for the babies??? I was wondering if the water dish is too deep, or if they won't drink from a dish and if not, how do I give them water??? That's about it...I am very excited...no signs of hatching yet (I check every day now) but maybe tomorrow!!!

Sounds like you have it covered, thats pretty much all you need.
As for water, most babies wont drink from a bowl, like adults do. They usually drink water off the walls of their humid hide, or some mist them. Make sure their humid hide doesnt dry out or mist them daily and they'll be fine. Good luck with the eggs too

I think the water bowl may be too deep.

I like using the plastic lids of salad dressing bottles.

With one breeding season under my belt, and 20 eggs cookin for this year, I believe that babies can and will drink from a water bowl, but if they have to climb up they could, theoretically fall in. It's unlikely, but better safe than sorry. I'm certainly not an expert, but all my babes from last year had water bowls and they all drank regularly and flourished.

I'll find a lid that is more shallow.
