WOOOO HOOOOOOO

mrfisher Jul 04, 2003 11:28 AM

Ok,

So I had been reading and researching and thinking about a comfy place for a dwarf caiman for a while. So I bought one. Then I realized that the 180 gallon tank wouldn't suffice for but a year... maaaaaaaaybe 18 months (I wouldn't have moved by then - 2- 2.5 years till I move). So I returned him (never got to actually take him home).

Finally!!! I found an "affordable" 460 gallon tank!!!
77 inches by 36 by 36. All tempered glass except the ends (which I imagine would be difficult for her to snap her tail at anyways).

This should suffice for a female Cuvier right?

Not to rain on your 4th of July parade.
Are we talkiing about a baby palp? Because a 7x 3 foot enclosure is going to swallow a baby palp.
For what its worth my experience has been keep the enclosure size to a more relative size in relation to the animal. After a couple of years then you could make a huge jump to a large enclosure. If it were me a baby palp would do great in a 40 gallon breeder(36x18x12high).
Let him get some confidence let him be master of a small domain.
I have a siamese who has grown between 3-4 inches a MONTH since dec. I had him in a 36x30 aquarium.
I pulled him out a week ago and put him in a 72x24 aquarium. He has'nt eaten since. I know he will start once he has acclimated but it is taking time. This is a CROC a very aggressive feeder who was clearly established and comfortable but still....
Baby crocodilians are a lot like snakes they will sacrifice some space to feel safe and in control of their environment.
Just one mans opinion. Danny Conner

Hi Danny,

Fortunately we celebrate July 1st here...

It's ok about the tank size. I agree with what you're saying and have several tank for him to grow through. It will only require some shuffling of fish too

He'll prob start in a 35 (puffers are moving in with the eel), then move to the 90 (at which point my stingray will prob have to "squeeze in" with my red tail and alligator gars. Then he'll move into the 460 (if it's too big, I can always section it off).

Thanks.

PS. My other thought was to take apart the tank and use the glass pieces to build a pen with.
