Florida king field pics and habitat..

Phil Peak Jan 10, 2005 08:13 AM

A short time back someone expressed an interest in seeing some field pics from south Florida in the area where the king snakes are found most commonly. This is typical cane field habitat in Palm Beach county south of Lake Okeechobee. This area is very flat and for miles all you can see is agricultural fields and an endless network of canals. The king snakes most often frequent those areas near the canals either in the open or under rocks and trash. It looks like a barren waste land, but it actually is a perfect manmade habitat for king snakes and other species.

This is a typical cane field king that was found under a rock at the canal in the photo.

I think this was the nicest looking king found by our group. This one was found on the crawl at mid day along a smaller canal in Hendry county. I wish I had more pics, but it wasn't one of my better days in the field with my camera.

..the line before the burn. They will stay just ahead of the flames and pick off anything that moves.

..Well not really

But I would like to see more of the same. I especially like pics of the trash or other types of cover they are found under. Any pics of habitat that shows where the actual find was made would be great.

Gotta get through this Jan/Feb winter somehow plus I am just tired of seeing all the eastern king stuff!

More w/c floridana pic's and habitat shots if anyone has got them.

Ya know I am glad you mentioned the King came from South of Okeechobee. I have to wonder if some people really think all Floridana in South Florida are nice yellow ones? I don't think I will ever make it farther South than Orlando anymore.....but if I ever score a nice yellow one on the field that far North I will probably take 1000 pics. Take it easy guys Tom Stevens
