Ontario tree frog

cicela Jan 10, 2005 01:21 PM

I've found a tree frog in my home. It had inadvertently been transported from Ontario to Montreal, Quebec in a large potted plant. It has somehow been surviving on it's own since September when I brought that plant home. I didn't notice it until a few days ago. What can I do to help it survive the rest of the winter until I can get it back to it's normal environment in Ontario? I believe it is a Gray Treefrog (Hyla versicolor).
Thanks,
Cicela

That's a tuff one...the frog wants to hibernate now. Maybe a small container with a lot of sphagnum in the garage until spring, then feed crickets after the thaw. Don't let it freeze. Keeping northern herps is complicated with brumation. You can try just keeping him moist and feeding him at room temperature, but you run the risk of throwing off his "internal clock". There is some controversy about whether hibernation is temperature dependant or cyclical (daytime sun duration). The important thing is to get him back where he came from...he should recover either way. Greys are survivors.

Thanks for the response. From some advice I received I bought a UVA lamp and am feeding him (the frog) crickets. Do you think this will be okay? I plan to take him back to Ontario in the spring and release him from where he came.
