General Uros

Advent Jan 10, 2005 04:46 PM

I just need to know some general info about uros. I'm thinking about getting one this summer, and i'd like to start my reasearch early.

First of all, what species do you recommend? I'd like one that will allow handling (what makes it worthwhile to me).

I'm just going to get one, and most likely put it in a 40 x 22 x 18ish tank, and decorate it accordingly.

I have a beardie already, and I also was wondering if uros were that much different from them besides looks and diet? And is their behavior better than beardies?

Thanks.

I'll probly think of more questions later lol.

Mali is probably your best bet to start with. They tend to have milder tempraments than the Nigers or Sudanese for example. As far as advice on their care - check out Doug's care sheet at Deer Fern Farms. He tells you pretty much everything you need to know. Kingsnake also has a great care sheet at the Uromastyx homepage. As far as comparing them to beardies, don't know for sure but think beardies like more humidity than uros. Uros got to have it dry, no water dish in the enclosure or anything. Beardies also like crickets as a regular part of their diets too I think, not necessary with uros who are primarily vegitarian but can have a cricket or two every now and then as a treat. Best wishes if you decide to get one!

Good for you. I believe malis are the best bet. They are the hardiest and seem to be the least expensive. The cage size for one will probably work. I have found them to have a lot more personality than the beardie, but...as far as handling they may be a challenge. in eight months I have been able to get them to hand feed, but the very next day they may run and hide when I approach. Like the beardie they seem to get calmer with age. Additionally, you will feed a higher veggie diet to malis and some adults will completely ignore prey.
