Hurray! My first newborn C.zebrata!

kisha Jan 10, 2005 06:27 PM

I can't believe what I just found, a newborn in my PTS cage just hangin' out. When I looked around I didn't see a twin, so must just be a singlton. I had suspicions that my female was gravid, but did not want to distress her with an ultrasound, so I just went on with daily business as usual. Wow, I've been waiting for this event for almost 2 years. Now I officially have a breeding pair. I haven't had anything to share in a while I guess this is a good reason to get back into this board.

Any advice about dealing with a neonate PTS would be great. I have already checked the umbilicus, quickly after washing hands, for any problems. It actually looks healed up, so he may have been hiding in a cork log for a few days before I noticed that he was in there.

Thanks in advance for your support, I knew this was a place with people who would understand how excited I am.

Hey, babies are popping out everywhere! Just interested in what part of the country (Us only, right?) that we are all located. we're in TN near Chattanooga and also just had a baby arrive around New Year's. I looked back to find a reply I had posted on neonate care on Dec 20 so take a look at that. Also wondering if anyone else out there can add or recommend other tips not thought of? I have no idea how to attach pics but I'll try to figure it out ASAP.

Take care, Darweedy

Thanks I found your post, I will get as much info as I can with out handeling him too much and post for everyone. I wonder if we are all simulating a rainy season in late march/april, or if the skinks just know what time of year it is and are breeding on their own, since we all seem to be getting babies about the same time of year? I would be interested to know how many sucessful breeders are trying for a "rainy season" or are just letting nature take its corse. I did not do a "rainy season" this year due to a failure in my misting pump, but will be this year after it has been replaced.

Congrats!!!
I don't change anything in my enclosure over the course of the year except change the timer every few months to match the outside light since the enclosure is near a window- breeding with my pair seems to happen feb-marchish and I get baby(ies) usually in October. This year it was December.
When I discover a baby, or if I see Gertie acting like birth is soon (she turns into a bottom dweller and soaks more), I add a large litter box on the bottom of the enclosure with it's own UTH, small H20 bowl and food bowl. I think dehydration is a major concern for the newborns, and spray the area at night as well so there are drips for them to drink.
cheers, Jess b

I would love to know of anyone else with this species near me. I have been wondering what to do when I need to reorganize the gene pool, or rehome any of the offspring. I hate to ship, but I don't know anyone else in my area who I would trust with these guys. I wish we had some sort of registry with bios and stuff so we could get to know eachother. Just an idea.
