anytime you get a new animal the initial costs are alot but if you set everything up and learn all you can before you get the animal, you will save yourself alot of money in the long run. now that i have everything for my lizards, no i don't think they are nearly as expensive as dogs or cats in regular maintenance.
i would not leave my lizards alone for a week. i have done it for two nights and fed them the morning i left and worried the whole time.
you can choose to handle them or just leave them be. the more you handle them the more tame they become, usually. i have one who seems to get wilder with time but i love him still.
