wits end with tail nipping babies

Thera Jan 10, 2005 06:51 PM

Hello,
I have a problem. Currently I am raising 2 clutches from two different parent lines. They both have severe issues with tail nipping. I've never had this before with clutches in the past, sure one or two random nips, but never an entire clutch turning on themselves. It's more of a problem with babies from one than the other for sure. I started off using the SAME setups that I used 2 years ago with the clutches I raised then. I feed them crickets 2 to 3 times a day until their tummies are super fat and they want no more. I give them greens daily too. And they even have a small dish with some meal worms in it just in case they decide that need just a BIT more food.
First I started off trying no decor because I remembered reading somewhere that they will nip a tail if that's all they see. Didn't work. Then I put different decor items in that would encourage them to climb to the tops of things and get away from each other more, which helped with one clutch, but the other still is horrible. I am currently keep about 6 or 7 dragons at 2 weeks old per 40 gallon cage.

ANY information that anyone could point me to would be awesome. Thanks

If its getting that bad all i can say is seperate them, make smaller groups. Try groups of two or three rather than six or seven

if only that was an option. When our entire bedroom is already cages of baby beardies and every available cage is in use, that really isn't an option, but thanks for the suggestion.

If I'm not mistaken... there was a breeder last year that had the same problem with one of four clutches from the same parents... I've heard that sometimes clutches can have biters in them... he said he took a dragon by its tail and moved it back and forth over the cage top and removed lizards that were intently following and watching super beardi and fianlly singled out the nipper... it was then sold to a pet store as punishment for it's cannableistic attrocities.... j/k I don't know if this will work for you but it's worth a shot....

Later,
Robert
